breastfeeding and pumping FAQS

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?

Signs include consistent weight gain, 5 or more wet nappies a day, and regular bowel movements. If you're concerned, you can reach out to an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) or consult the Australian Breastfeeding Association.

Is it normal for breastfeeding to hurt in the beginning?

Some discomfort is normal initially as you and your baby adjust. However, pain that persists might indicate an issue, such as poor latch. Consult a lactation consultant or the ABA for advice.

Can I breastfeed and pump at the same time?

Yes, you can pump while breastfeeding to increase supply or build a milk stash. A hands-free pump like Bubka's can be particularly helpful. For more tips, refer to ABA's article on pumping.

When should I start pumping?

It’s generally recommended to wait 3-4 weeks before introducing a pump to ensure breastfeeding is well established. However, if you need to return to work or build a milk stash earlier, consult a lactation consultant for guidance.

How do I store breast milk?

In Australia, freshly expressed milk can be stored at room temperature for up to 6 hours, in the fridge for up to 72 hours, and in the freezer for up to 6 months. Always label and date milk storage containers. The ABA provides detailed guidelines on safe storage.

How can I increase my milk supply?

Frequent breastfeeding, ensuring a good latch, staying hydrated, and resting can help boost supply. If you’re still concerned, consult an IBCLC or reach out to the Australian Breastfeeding Association for tailored advice.
