When my wife gave birth two years ago, the midwife arrived with what looked like heavy machinery - a corded electric breast pump accompanied by various parts, including 30mm flanges. At the time, we had no idea how critical these components would become.
Since starting Bubka, we’ve learned how essential it is to get the basics right from the beginning. One of the most important aspects we discovered is proper flange sizing. Flanges - the parts that fit around the nipple during pumping - come in different sizes to suit different nipple shapes and sizes. A 30mm flange, for instance, might not fit everyone and can affect both comfort and milk expression.
Proper sizing isn’t just a small detail - it’s central to an effective and comfortable breast pumping experience. A poorly fitting flange can cause discomfort, reduced milk supply, or even pain. Ensuring each mum starts with the right fit can make a huge difference.
As we prepare for our second baby, that old 30mm flange has become a reminder of how far we’ve come and what support is (and isn’t) available to new mums. What information are midwives and IBCLCs providing in hospitals? Education about pumping should be the norm - not something mums are left to figure out alone via late-night searches.
At Bubka, we’re committed to helping families start strong with the right tools and guidance. If you’ve got questions or need support, reach out to us here.
